Yenomi Society Structure

Yenomi society is generally very peaceful and co-operative, partly because yenomi have distinct abilities that require them to work in harmony in order to achieve a thriving community. They live in herd groups comprised of both sun and moon yenomi, with strong ties to the seasons.

Yenomi are partially nomadic, but only move twice per year between spring/summer and autumn/winter locations. They pursue locations that offer the best balance of day and night - because their society and daily life is ruled by phases of the sun and moon, yenomi do not do well in places with extremely long days or months of darkness. Therefore most yenomi groups are equatorial. However, there are also some outlying yenomi herds that live in the north and south, and even more co-operation is required for these to survive.

Yenomi are superstitious (with good reason - the goddesses have proven themselves to enjoy taking a hand in the daily affairs of common yenomi) and enjoy folk tales, folk lore and horoscopes. Developing one’s own special skill and place in the world is a core value.

Because of their strict diurnal schedules, yenomi society is oddly divided. Those who are of Bright phase will be most active in the early morning and drift off to sleep in the early evening, so they may never meet the Midnight phase yenomi of their own herd. That said, the presence of every single yenomi is felt and known because of their dedication to their tasks and jobs as part of the community. Waking up in the morning, a Dawnstar yenomi might find a new talisman crafted by a Midnight herdsmate during the night, which allows them to do their own job better in the daylight hours.

Roles of Sun Yenomi

Yenomi rely on both hunter-gatherer and agricultural methods of collecting food. Therefore the daylight hours are very busy and full of activity. Sun-affinity yenomi are raised to either tend crops, or to understand the landscape so they can gather food - both magic and organic yenomi can perform either task, depending on their disposition. Magic yenomi tend to handle tasks that require finesse and exactness, while organic yenomi step in whenever hard work is needed. Crops include herbs, maize and sturdy grasses and grains to prepare for winter. Berries, mushrooms, roots and feathers are among the items gathered by those who are taught land lore. Because they work so hard, sun yenomi are also careful to take time each day to relax and look after themselves, and grooming is often performed by specialised yenomi.

Roles of Night Yenomi

Crafting and magic also play a large role in the way of yenomi life, and this mostly takes place at night. Moon-affinity yenomi are raised to become master crafters, and their craft depends on whether they are magic or organic. Magic yenomi use their powers to create healing and protective spells, casting charms to cure or store food, creating tinctures and potions for yenomi grooming routines and creating magically-powerful items. Organic yenomi use the time to sort out herbs for apothecary use, tend to mushroom gardens, keep detailed almanacs that record the herd’s process, and clean and tidy up some of the communal areas after the busy day work has been completed.

Interaction between Sun and Moon Affinities

Each Yenomi is most active in their respective phase. For instance, a Golden yenomi will start to wake up some time after noon and will retire just after midnight. Therefore their schedule would overlap most with Bright and Dusk yenomi. They may have very passing relations with Midnight yenomi. That said, there is no competition or animosity between the different phases - everyone respects each other for working hard and helping the herd get along.

Romances are most common between yenomi of neighbouring phases (eg, Dusk and Twilight or Midnight and Bright) simply because of logistics, but otherwise it’s not impossible to make it work. Friendships occur across all phases, and yenomi like to leave notes for each other if their phases make it difficult to properly communicate or interact.

The Goddesses Ara and Cephei

According to yenomi folk lore, the two goddesses Ara and Cephei are responsible for the creation of yenomi. Whether the goddesses can actually take credit for that is a mystery, but they are very active in yenomi life regardless and have a very close, symbiotic relationship. Ara is the goddess of the moon, while Cephei is the goddess of the sun. They are moody and capricious just like normal yenomi - however they have powers to bestow blessings as rewards for hardworking or caring yenomi, and they enjoy mediating any disagreements in the society. However they tend to advise, not rule. They have some ability of fortune telling, and have been known to warn yenomi herds of impending dangers. That said, they certainly aren’t all-knowing and don’t necessarily offer solutions. They love the yenomi very much and always try to facilitate co-operation between the affinities as much as possible.

Wow, I love how creative this is! I especially loved when you said "yenomi like to leave notes for each other if their phases make it difficult to properly communicate or interact." I thought that was the sweetest thing!
